Keyboard Troubleshooting

If your keyboard does not work upon installation or is not responding correctly:

  • Confirm that your keyboard cable is securely plugged into the correct port in the computer and that your computer is plugged in and turned on.

  • Confirm that there are no breaks or sharp twists in the keyboard cable.

  • Confirm that the correct keyboard driver is installed in your system (If applicable. Note that the drivers not needed for Windows 2000 or newer).

Connection issues with Windows, USB Connections:

The KUS keyboards are compatible with Windows 95 through Windows 7. However, Windows XP (introduced in 2000) was the first Windows program to work with USB connections. Earlier versions of Windows did not recognize USB connections very well. However, subsequent updates offered by Microsoft® have resolved this problem. If you are using a Windows 95-97 version and having any difficulty with your keyboard connection, go to www.microsoft.com and search for information on how to enable USB support for your Windows® operating system.

There are also keyboard drivers available on our website that may help.

Connection issues with Dell PCs:

Some Dell computers do not provide enough voltage from the USB ports to power some USB devices (Dell Latitude and Inspiron PC are known to have this issue).

When attempting to use a non-Dell keyboard, such as our Keys-U-See keyboards, various communication errors may occur, including "device initialization" and "device not found" error messages. This is due to the fact that most keyboards are designed to operate using 5 volts and therefore are not receiving enough power to operate properly.

Dell recommends purchasing a powered USB hub to provide the USB devices with enough power to operate correctly.

Using a KVM Switch Box:

If you are connecting the keyboard through a KVM (Keyboard/VGA/Mouse) switch box make sure to turn off all devices connected to the switch box before connecting your keyboard.

If the mouse or keyboard do not work upon installation:

  • Your wireless keyboard includes a 2.4GhZ USB Dongle (connector). Check to see that you have connected the Dongle receiver properly.

  • Make sure no other keyboards, whether wired or wireless, are connected to your computer. The Keys-U-See wireless keyboard will only function if it is the only keyboard connected to your computer.

  • Check to see that you have installed the batteries with the negative (-) and positive (+) terminals in the correct position.

  • If needed, recharge the batteries or install new batteries.

If the cursor does not move properly on the screen, or the characters do not display correctly, or the mouse or keyboard becomes unresponsive:

If the battery is running low, the mouse or keyboard may not work properly or may stop working altogether. You should immediately replace the batteries with new or newly recharged batteries.

Email "Hot Key" and Windows 7

There is a known issue with the Email "Hot Key" due to the fact that Windows 7 installs with no email client (such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express) by default. You will need to install an email client to send and receive email. The recommendation from Microsoft is to go to http://download.live.com and download Windows Live Mail. After you have installed an email client and set it up as a Default Program the Email "Hot Key" on your keyboard will then function.

Spilled Liquid

If any liquid is spilled on the keyboard or mouse, switch off your computer immediately and unplug all items. Turn the keyboard upside down to drain the liquid.

  • If the liquid is water, simply let the keyboard dry before using it again.

  • If the liquid is a sticky substance, drain the liquid and then completely wipe the keyboard with a damp cloth. Allow the keyboard to dry completely before reconnecting it to the computer.

Cleaning your keyboard

Be sure the computer is turned off before cleaning.

Keyboards should be cleaned on a monthly basis. Gently shake or blow out any debris and wipe with a soft cloth or tissue applied with “spray and wipe” cleaner. DO NOT spray directly onto the keyboard.

In the event that you have dropped something into the keyboard that can not be removed by tilting and shaking, you may need to remove one or more of the keys near the object to remove the object. To remove a key, you can use a flat blade screwdriver or butter knife. Gently slide the blade under the key you want to remove and gently (but firmly) pry up and twist. The key should pop out. To replace the key, simply position it back in its space and push down until level with the rest of the keys.

Sticking Keys

DO NOT use any type of lubricant on your keyboard!

If a key is sticking, try to remove it and clean any debris around the key. Check to make sure the underside of the key is clean and clean it if needed.
